- Can I mix different thermocouple types on one AI563 module?
- Yes, each of the 4 channels is independently configurable. You can use type J on channel 1 and type K on channel 2 without problems.
- What happens if I connect a voltage more than 30V?
- The overvoltage protection handles up to 30V DC. Brief surges up to 35V for 0.5s are tolerated, but continuous overvoltage may damage the input.
- Do I need an external cold junction compensator?
- No. The AI563 has internal cold junction sensing. For high precision you can use an external isothermal terminal, but it’s not mandatory.
- Is this module suitable for hazardous areas?
- No, the AI563 is designed for safe area / control cabinet use only. For Zone 1 applications consider ABB’s S900 series like AI950S.
- How fast does the module update all channels?
- Total update time for all 4 channels is less than 1.6 seconds. Each channel takes 400ms conversion time.
- What is the minimum wire gauge for terminals?
- Use 0.5mm² to 2.5mm² stranded or solid wire. Terminal screws torque to 0.5‑0.6Nm.
- Can I power the module from the CPU backplane?
- Yes, it draws approx. 5mA from the CPU interface. The main field supply (24V DC) must be connected to terminals 19/20.
- Does it support RTD sensors like Pt100?
- No, AI563 is thermocouple‑only. For RTDs use ABB AI561 or AI950S modules.
